[X4U] Project outlining

I need to sharpen my project outlining skills and am interested in  
suggestions for either / or techniques and software which people find  
useful in this.

I tend to keep it all in my head, which often works, except for more  
involved projects, where I tend to get clobbered and overwhelmed.

I see this app out there called FreeMind, but it's not clear that it  
would be a good outlining or project planning tool.
