rather than deleting mail, or zipping it I'd suggest opening mail, and go to the general preferences tab. The very first item beneath all the various "tabs" is a pull down menu that says "Default email reader"

"Mail" appears at the top, but below is the word "Select..." which you can use to Select your copy of Thunderbird.


I would not toss any of the OS X-Installed applications. times I've done that in the past, it seemed to break things, and I was woefully sorry I'd done so, often forcing me to back up my user folder and re-install my system and all my applications.

After de-selecting Mail.app as your mail program, it won't do any harm just sitting there. On my drive, Mail.app takes up 77mb of space.

I've got pictures bigger than that!
