That's kind of what I was thinking, invest in the new ones/and/or a refurbished 4th generation, that way I would be set for at least 3 years of productivity with those iPads before needing to consider upgrading. That said; the iPad 4 version (the current Retina model) is way better than either the 2 or 3. You can count on the 2 and 3 likely being left behind by the iOS 8 release in a year or so.
