[X4U] MAC to TV

I have a MacPro desktop, 2.66 Quad core Intel Xeon, 8 GB DDR3, running 
OS 10.8.5.

I bought a 25' vga cable with sound connections. I plugged it into the 
DVI pigtail and connected it to my HD TV through the vga/sound connection.

No picture on TV.

When I went to SysPref and clicked Display there is NO auto detect for 
the TV>

Was told this was a simple plug and view ... HELP!!!
