Speaking from experience...it's because the Ti appears to be less rugged [You drop an iBook..it bounces.]  The case on Ti's  tend to dent and scratch easily in normal use.  The finish on the Ti's  bubble and flake off.   When I pay $3000 for something, I don't want it to look like it the cat used it for a scratching post   after a few weeks.
My Ti was accidentally subjected to a horrendous fall  and I will (most happily) report that it still works quite well, nothing damaged internally, only the external casing.
And did we mention the airport range is noticably greater in iBooks than in Ti's?  
Having said all that...and still owning both a clamshell and a Ti...I love them both  and have no intention of getting rid of either one.
