Kinda OT: AOL picture attachments

I have read that AOL is screwy about attachments. I know it's trash, but
I know some people who use it and won't let go.

I have search the web looking for answers, but there is not much
detailed info on AOL's "issues". And AOL only wants you to keep
upgrading, even if your machine can't handle the latest version.

Does someone have the skinny on what AOL does to pictures/attachments?
Is there a way to unmangle what their mail programs do?
