I think I'm closer to the answer. On the first two (failed) tries, the first
folder was some photos, which cloned fine, but the next was my applications
folder, and that's where it stalled both times. So this time I deleted the
Apps folder from CCC before cloning, and bingo, a full backup in under an
hour. So now, I'm repeating the process, but just cloning the Apps folder.
