My iBook has the "Memento" syndrom !!!!

Yes, you can safely trash the three Apple Help .plist files.

They are located in your Home/Library/Preferences folder and named thus:
com.apple.help.plist
com.apple.helpui.plist
com.apple.helpviewer.plist

Trash all three, then reopen help viewer. After a brief pause, it will 
most likely work the way it should (which is to say slow, but much 
better). Even if it doesn't fix the problem, no harm will be done.
