Noisy CD drive

I asked this once before but didn't get any responses. The CD drive 
in my wife's iBook (dual USB bought last June) is quite noisy. It 
sounds as if it's labouring to access a CD with an almost grinding 
noise. Is this normal? Thanks, Stephen
