Try booting from the f/w hard drive. See what happens. I had a similar 
instance with my wife's G4 tower, I reinstalled just the system 
(maintaining my user prefs) and it worked after that. Sounds like some 
bad voodoo happened to your System folder. If booting from the f/w hard 
drive works, maybe you can just swipe the system folder from it for 
your ibook.
