Does the box which shows up have a large semi transparent circular 
power switch behind the writing? And is the dialog in numerous 
languages? If so that is 10.2 new kernel panic dialog box. No longer 
should you receive a bunch of drop down script from the top of your 
screen. Also, upon reboot if you open "HD/Library/Logs/panic.log"  it 
will tell you the reason for the kernel panic (all be it in cryptic 
computer script) but it's a start. I had the same problem with my 17" 
iMac and it turned out to be the RAM I had installed.
