Does the box which shows up have a large semi transparent circular
power switch behind the writing? And is the dialog in numerous
languages? If so that is 10.2 new kernel panic dialog box. No longer
should you receive a bunch of drop down script from the top of your
screen. Also, upon reboot if you open "HD/Library/Logs/panic.log"  it
will tell you the reason for the kernel panic (all be it in cryptic
computer script) but it's a start. I had the same problem with my 17"
iMac and it turned out to be the RAM I had installed.

That is the exact box that I am getting.  I guess this means it is a 
kernel panic.  I only used to get those drop down scripts maybe once 
every 3 or 4 weeks at most.  Now this is becoming a daily thing with 
10.2.4
Does anyone know how to decipher a panic.log?
