We have six two-line phones at various locations in our 3000 square foot home/office. There is no problem. I don't see why splitting a single phone line to accommodate various devices would be a problem (unless, of course, you want to be on the phone at the same time as you're sending or receiving a fax). I don't think fax machines or fax modems deal with call waiting too well, either.
