You can override DHCP on most routers by selecting an ip address outside the range of host-assigned addresses. For example, my router doles out addresses in the range 192.168.1.100 to .255. If I set my ibook to something else on the same subnet (eg 192.168.2.100 the router accepts it as a fixed ip address.
