[P1] cannot install panther

I would run a disk utility first (Disk Utility if you're in OS X, Disk 
First Aid if you're in OS 9) and see if there's some sort of 
corruption. If at all possible, you'll want to boot from a CD to run 
the utility, for it to do the most thorough job; run the program twice 
to make sure any problems have been fixed.
