If you can get to either a) your account settings or b) the schedule changes (this depends on what you're using for e-mail, I'm more familiar with Entourage), there should be a place where you can make it where you check and send your e-mail manually instead of at a set interval. That's what I do, and it works fine on Entourage. I'm sure the setting's there somewhere. You could also set it to send and receive only on connect if that option's available.
