Hello-
In my experience, Appleworks is the worst at converting Microsoft
Office files (though better than it used to be). There are some better
alternatives:
AbiWord for Word and Gnumeric for Excel. Both are available for
Apple's X11 (free at
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/x11formacosx.html [also
included on the developer's cd of Panther]). Both are free, but if you
don't want to mess with compiling, etc., you can download ($30) or get
a cd ($40) from:
http://www.openosx.com/office/index.html
These are just 2 of many good programs that are available on this
"office" cd.
Another free option is to use OpenOffice.org from:
http://www.openoffice.org/
I've had good luck with word files, but trouble with some excel charts
(is getting better w/ every release). This office program also uses
Apple's X11.
There's also a program called MacLinkPlus that I've never tried, but
sells for $80 at:
http://www.dataviz.com/products/maclinkplus/index.html
Unfortunately, none of these options can open EVERY file. I still have
to use Office 2001 for Mac every now and then.
