The question is when does the stress and wear on a computer show a difference, in other words does the computer wear out more if left on than if let cool and restart? And what components suffer more, a on off switch will wear out from use but not if the computer is let run. I've never seen a light bulb fail while in use but I've seen many fail just as they were turned on. I did short circuit an entire hotel once when changing a light bulb but that seems unrelated. I would imagine the stress of shutting down and starting up is harder on a computer than letting it run, for reasonable times. Sleep is probably less so.
