Just my two cents..
download the utility "Cocktail" ...
It is awesome... It has an auto setting which runs various mantenance stuff including..
running fix permissions and running os x's built in mantenance scripts...
If you sleep the book during the downtime.. as I and most laptoppers do.. OS X can't run the unix cron scripts that usually are run in the wee hours of the morning... Coctail runs these so your machine is in tip top shape...
one should also run fsck every once and awhile...
That said... I too have experienced the sleep of death from the ibook... it is a mysterious thing....
My ibook is in service getting a new logic board....It has been in for service 3 times now.... Hope this times the charm...
rockin'

Good answer. One extra point, if you use sleep then you don't subject
your computer to the rigors of a cold start not to mention the user's
nerves being frayed by having to wait.
