I replied to e.mkeene offlist with my thanks. His info on CCC was 
very helpful. But just to follow-up, part of the problem was that the 
Panther book somehow lost track of there being any users and 
consequently could not let me sign on. A reinstall of Panther didn't 
help, but a clean install and removing the old folder did.
