I've never done the conversion you're trying but ffmpegx should be able to 
do it for you. It a great app and the resulting quality is great but the 
encoding can be a little slow.

This is entirely off-topic, but since I'm desperate and did a spend
*hours* looking for an answer... Any of you know about how to convert
avi files (might that be divx or xvid codecs) into a format iDVD will
be able to use (probably only .mov)?
