They were not open when the desktop came up, but generally I get a message when Safari quits and I've never had Mail quit before, so I don't know if it has a message like Safari does. It 'felt' like a restart in a way. Thanks for the answer. I'll run Cocktail later to be sure. I thought a restart fixed permissions?
