Heavy CPU usage by finder

I have a new G4 ibook running panther. In the past 2+ weeks I have 
caught the Finder process using 85% to 95% of the CPU even with no open 
Finder windows or apparent activity. The only reason I notice is the 
system fan comes on while I'm just web surfing which isn't right (gets 
quite warm as well).  I just kill the Finder to solve the problem, it 
restarts itself. I don't know what causes it. It is not a function of 
time between reboots. Anyone else have this problem and knows of a fix?
