There are a few basic checkbook alternatives; I think Quicken is going 
to be your only option for bill payment (and maybe even for downloading 
transactions) through a program, but if you don't need to do that, you 
do have a few options.

Quicken isn't so bad, really, but it can be much more than is necessary.
