Have you tried running one of the utilities to clear out logs, scratch 
files and so forth? How big is your hard disk? I have a problem similar 
to this that happens every once in a blue moon, and it seems to be that 
the OS has written so much virtual memory to the disk that there's just 
no room for anything else. Restarting and running the appropriate 
utility clears out those files, and everything works again.
