[iBook] Help for a friend...

There is always trying out single user mode (hold down apple-S on power 
up) and doing some magical FSCK...  (type in   fsck -yf     at the 
prompt)

Yes, you can boot from the CD, disk 1... they are holding down the C 
key for at least a full 30 seconds when they power up the computer, 
right?  And keep in mind that the boot from CD takes longer than a 
normal boot up so patience is a good thing (not that most computers 
display them)
