[iBook] S.M.A.R.T. status : Failing

Well, when the drives are not being used, the heads are 'parked', and
the drives are actually pretty resilient. I took my G4 800 with me on
a cycle trip around Europe. And more recently, I dropped my ipod mini
while cycling along at about 35km/h (don't ask me how)*. I was sure
I'd recover a paper weight, but it seems to be ok - although I had to
remove some bitumen from newly added dents to the beautiful
aluminium.. :-(

Anyway - in general, drives are pretty tough. Some, though, will fail
for manufacturing defects, etc...

-thats- why it's VITAL to backup! :-)

Good luck getting it sorted!

*thankfully, ipods only spin the HD to put the song into RAM. The
heads are then parked. I'm reasonably confident that, had the heads
been reading the HD at the time of impact, I WOULD have recovered a
paper weight...
