Most any external drive should work. I would go ahead and get a 2 layer DVD-RW drive, since they are getting less expensive all the time. By the way, an internal may not be as expensive as you think. Tech Restore has a pretty good overnight service. I haven't had a failed hard drive myself, but I have heard good things about them.
