[iBook] system freeze following sound

I'm no expert, but ... something similar happened to my 900 MHz iBook
last week, and it would seem to be that the logic board is going
(again). I had the logic board replaced twice (HD once) while it was
covered by AppleCare, but she's nearly 4 years old now, a year past
the AppleCare coverage. After considering doing a transplant myself,
I found that one site (www.ifixit.com) listed the logic board as
$449, but out of stock. Ebay lists one (used of course) for $299.
I think your husband needs to copy the essential contents of his HD
to an external HD (or iPod) or another Mac, and then make a
purchasing decision (check out the refurbs at the Apple Store and
other places).
Now, if it's *just* the HD, or fan acting up repair may be a viable
option. But definitely do a backup ASAP.
