I'm no expert, but ... something similar happened to my 900 MHz iBook last week, and it would seem to be that the logic board is going (again). I had the logic board replaced twice (HD once) while it was covered by AppleCare, but she's nearly 4 years old now, a year past the AppleCare coverage. After considering doing a transplant myself, I found that one site (www.ifixit.com) listed the logic board as $449, but out of stock. Ebay lists one (used of course) for $299. I think your husband needs to copy the essential contents of his HD to an external HD (or iPod) or another Mac, and then make a purchasing decision (check out the refurbs at the Apple Store and other places). Now, if it's *just* the HD, or fan acting up repair may be a viable option. But definitely do a backup ASAP.
