Thanks for the feedback! He also had his logic board replaced, back when it was covered, and though I was originally assuming hard drive, I'm guessing you might just be right. He has decided to stop using the iBook until he can get home next week (thank goodness for public libraries) and can do a full backup. Then we can run some disk diagnostics. If it's not *obviously* the hard drive, we'll revisit the problem then, but I'm with you: if we're going to drop more than two or three hundred dollars on a fix, it's probably more logical to consign the machine to providing spare parts (although if I could get the lagic board cheaply enough, I do rather like messing around inside these iBooks). The good news is we have another same-generation iBook for him to use, and it hasn't ever suffered from the logic board problem. The bad news is that the second iBook is my backup machine, especially for non-Universal apps like Photoshop, but also, ever since I migrated everything to my new MacBook Pro, I've been unable to print to the Adobe PDF printer, so I've been distilling my pdf files on the iBook. So now I absolutely must get that problem fixed (it's integral to my business) so I can hand over the iBook. Sigh. The MBP is sweet, of course, but I'll miss the iBook--my favorite computer ever...
