The iPod depends entirely on iTunes. Its sort order is that in the playlist in iTunes. If you want to change the sort order, click one of the column headers to sort in that order (title, artist, etc.) If you want to drag the songs in your own order, click the left-most column header - the short one with no label - then drag the songs in the order you want. As I say (repeatedly) in my forthcoming iPod book, the key to understanding the iPod is understanding iTunes.
