Designating an album as a compilation will result in 'Various Artists' displaying in Cover Flow view, whereas there may be cases where most tracks on an album are by a particular artists but some tracks involve the participation of someone else also. You can specify the difference on a per-track basis ('with Such-and-such'', for instance) but avoid Cover Flow displaying two instances of the album cover by filling in the principal artist's name as Album Artist. <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304389> goes in to further detail.
