Yep, I got an idea - but I do not know what OS you are in. I had similar stuff happen when OS X (10.6 in my case) broke. As soon as you see something peculiar like this boot from your install CD and start the Disc Utility from the menu. Fix your OSX partition. I eventually had to use Disk Warrior and move all my info to another computer and re-install - but then I waited a little too long before I realized what was needed. Everything was easy to save and the system booted but it would no longer run programs or let the information (Apple + i) function at all.
