Do you have access to another IDE DVD-ROM drive that you can swap in to 
see if that makes a difference?

Also, in my opinion, you're not missing much with regards to the 
widgets.  The only widget I use is a Sudoku game to keep me sane while 
I'm waiting for other tasks to finish.
