[G4] G4 slow to sync with iPod w/Firewire

I picked up a a Power Mac G4 PCI graphics, installed OS X Tiger and I'm setting up my iPod to sync to it.  Previously I had the iPod syncing to a WinXP PC via USB and syncing was fast.  It's a 20GB iPod, 3rd generation?

I copied the music over to the Mac, formatted the drive Macintosh style, and began the sync with a Firewire cable.  It is s-l-o-w.  After about an hour it's transferred about 2.8GB.

Any ideas on speeding this up?
