audio beeping? FCP3

I captured some footage from my VX2000.

When I opened the file in FCP3, I played the clip
in the viewer. There is a steady paced beeping noise.
I couldn't find anything about it in the manual.

I dragged the clip into the timeline, and then from there
to the viewer. The beeping was gone. But, going directly
to the viewer produces the beeping when playing it back.
What's the problem?   OSX   -doug
