I guess there's a difference between being computer literate and 
understanding unix pathnames...

the ~/ is short for your home directory, which on these machines 
running OS X is /Users/username.

Let's hope it doesn't get any worse than this...  I've had a home 
directory on a Sun server that was a few more steps removed from the 
root directory.  At least OS X gives you the nice little home icon to 
click on for us graphically oriented folk :-)
