[MacDV] When video editing, does a G3 run better with OS9 or X?

Top of my head X,  Friend runs OSX10.1 and FCP 3 on a 700 Mz iMac.
  But he has troubles with his external drive.
I think on my quicksilver FCP might run faster in 9 than X but crashes 
MUCH less often in X.
