It is very clear from the manuals etc that DVD-R recorders will not
record DVD+R media and vice versa, so the big issues concern playback.

I think this may be true of computer DVD drives but may not be true of
standalone drives.

This seems certainly to be the case. Perhaps dual format drives will
become universal like dual standard PAL/SECAM TV sets in Europe or dual
PAL/NTSC standards in VCR playback so the problem will be solved in
firmware and not worry the consumer.  Either that or one format will
disappear through atttrition.
