Yes, it's possible, and preferable over using the analog cables because you
can get a bit perfect copy over Firewire.

It's possible, unless you have a camcorder bought in the EU. They cripple
the camcorders so the only way to record on them is through the lens,
because VCRs are taxed at a higher rate than camcorders (so-called
"nEUtering").
