I would not try this for backup purposes as the UDF file system does not
seem completely stable and I've already lost more work I "backed up" to RW
than by any other means.

RW, whether it is CD or DVD is not reliable, in my opinion.

I do, however, create DVD-RWs for immediate viewing (to make sure the
menus and buttons work, and the video quality is acceptable) before
burning to a DVD-R.
