Import quality

I just had my 8mm movies transferred. I have copies on both minidv (I 
think that's how you spell it) and on DVD.

My question concerns importing. I know i can use a minidv cam and 
import via firewire ... but i don't have such a camera, so i was 
thinking of using an A/V analog to digital converter (which i have) 
and playing the DVD through a regular DVD player, through the 
converter, and into the G5.

Would i be sacrificing any quality if i did it this way? When i had 
the transfer place do the DVD i had them do it without any 
compression for the best possible playback.

Ideas, comments, recommendations?
