Abby,

Just so I can also follow the discussion and learn, what software are 
you importing into?  I may have missed that.  Your second post mentions 
that you have only a few GB of memory. Tom Wolsky's book "Final Cut 
Express 2" explains the need for lots of memory and a fast external HD. 
  (By the way, I'm in West Texas and it's hard to find Mac help here as 
well!)
