I had that conversation with a friend before I bought the Canopus. "My
DirecTV receiver is digital, my Power Mac is digital, why can't I just
plug them into each other?" He pointed out that the digital format used
by DirecTV isn't one that the Mac can understand. Hence the need to use
analog outputs from the receiver through an A/D converter and then to
the Mac.

That would certainly be the easiest and least expensive option. :-)
