I used to have a 667 (pre-Combo drive) and I now have a 1 Ghz Powerbook.
Here is my extremely unscientific "Bedroom verdict"...

The range with the 1 Ghz is marginally superior to the 667. Whereas I kept
losing contact with the base station when I was working from my bedroom in
bed if I shifted the position of the Powerbook just slightly, I can maintain
a usable (but less than ideal) contact with the base using the 1 Ghz
Powerbook without dropping the connection.

As an aside, the use of MacStumbler is a godsend. With it you can position
the Powerbook so that it gets the very best signal strength from the base
and make a marginal connection at least usable.
