XPress has a shortcut to redraw the screen: Command-Option-Period. Give it a
try if you're tired of clicking the window shade widget.

There's also an XTension called "Classic Draw XT" that claims to eliminate
these screen artifacts, but it didn't work in my machine. In fact, it
worked, but did nothing. But you can give it a try, too.
