OS X works in root-less mode, so whenever you modify a system file from a non-root account (even if your account is allowed to admin) you have to provide a password. bbedit has a unix command tool that allows you to call bbedit from the shell, that's why I can do: %bbedit myfilename in this case, since it is a protected file, I had to do: %sudo bbedit myfilename which made me enter my password before even allowing bbedit to open the file. Then when I saved, bbedit asked once again for the password.
