Airport card turned on slows things down.

I have been trying to track down a bug on my Powerbook for quite awhile now.
I have a FW800 15" Powerbook with an Airport Extreme card installed. When
the card is turned off everything runs very well and very fast. However,
once I turn on Airport, certain applications either refuse to run or run
very slowly. Apple Help Viewer is an example. If Airport is running, I have
to wait about 2 or 3 minutes for it to start, or once started to load a
requested resource. With Airport off, it runs very well. The same with
iClock and iJournal and a few others that I use regularly. Also the Finder
starts to have problems from time to time (When it does I quickly quit the
Finder and turn to Pathfinder which is not effected). I reinstalled Airport
3.4.1 and 3.4.2 and nothing has changed.

Has anyone have any ideas here?
