[Ti] Slow as molasses lately...

The last time I re-started (two weeks ago). I lost all my mail 
preferences.  I have 1GB free on my hard drive.  Now I know about the 
dread swap files from Safari and the dangers of low disk space on OS X. 
  But why is Mail and Safari so bogged down, needing to spin the hard 
drive, hanging the system with the spinning beach ball, while I am 
waiting for whatever to finish?
