The iPod can get into a status where it does not appear as a disk and the updater "Restore" function is not available. This can also happen if the iPod is formatted on a PC.

In some cases, the iPod can be forced into disk mode and then formatted on the Macintosh. Afterwards, the iPod Updater "Restore" function works.

One way to force the iPod into disk mode is:

(1) toggle the Hold switch to Hold and then Off
(2) press Menu and Select for about 6 seconds, until an Apple icon appears
(3) immediately press Play and Select until a disk mode icon appears

if you get a 'bad disk' icon, you'll have to get it repaired by Apple.

You can also:

(1) toggle the Hold switch
(2) press Menu and Select for about 6 seconds, until an Apple icon appears
(3) press left and Select until the display backlights. You then have a menu of choices. Step through it with the forward and back buttons
